NEW WORK: Greenbank Hotel - A new website and identity bump for Falmouth's favourite waterside hotel.

The @greenbankhotel has been a fixture for us, as mostly Falmouth residents, for years now. From after-work cocktails to Sunday roasts downstairs, visiting family members staying there to cosy client meetings. So we were delighted when we got the opportunity to continue our work with the team there and build an all-new, content-managed website. The hotel is over 400 years old, and in its time it's heard its fair share of epic adventures and tall tales, and the site puts story and wonder at the forefront. We love this one, and want to give a big thanks to the Greenbank team for their bravery and dedication towards making something special.

Happy Friday!

As the weekend is upon us, we thought we would do a quick round-up of some things that have been inspiring the team recently.

Zander: We were recently in Bilbao and took our 8-year-old to the @museoguggenheim. A beautiful experience, full of inspiration - with some of the art there making it into a moodboard for a project that's in progress.

Ceri: I spotted a Falmouth Design students work in the Creative Conscience Awards, @megmardondesign. This work struck my eye with its brilliant concept around emotional durability, oh and not to mention the beautiful execution!

Frann: I recently stumbled across an article about the band ‘Lankum’, whose album was shortlisted for the Mercury Award this year. Referred to as the ‘OK Computer’ of Irish Folk, the deeply apocalyptic sound of ‘False Lankum’ was a real revelation for me and has been spinning on the vinyl player ever since. Any fans of folk horror film classics would enjoy giving it a whirl.

Liam: “The Panther’s Tale” by Walton Ford. The tale of a panther’s daring escape from Zurich Zoo in 1934.

I love the evolution of this painting in the hands of tattoo artist Luke Jinks (@lukejinks). The ability of “The Panther’s Tale” to transcend time and medium, from the classic painting by Ford to the reinterpretations by Luke Jinks, showcases the enduring power of art to captivate and engage viewers across generations.

Hello there! I’m Liam, proudly serving as a Web Developer at Venn. My journey with this team began as a six-month intern over two years ago, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been invited to stay on as a permanent member of the team. It’s been an amazing ride!

Throughout my time here, I’ve had the pleasure of diving into a diverse array of projects, ranging from small local businesses to impactful global charities and everything in between. Recent Work: Jackie Stanley. Identity update, animation, illustration and a content-managed, API-integrated website for Padstow's favourite estate agents.

@jackiestanleyea is a family-run business which, over the last thirty years, has become known for its warm, down-to-earth approach for buying and selling properties. We worked closely with the folks there to develop its long-standing position and create a unique, friendly-yet-refined website. It was a pleasure to partner with a team who so readily understood that every industry has the opportunity to create surprise and delight through design. The project involved a top-to-bottom re-imagining of what an estate agent site could be, from animation, illustration and storytelling to deep API integration and CWV-performant webpages - all on our favourite CMS, WordPress.

NEW WORK: Sumatran Orangutan Society Conservation Greenprint - documenting @orangutanssos strategy to achieve a thriving future for Sumatran orangutans, Forests and People.

We've been working with the delightful team @orangutanssos for many years now and are constantly inspired by their passion and commitment to protecting these beautiful, vulnerable mammals. The Conservation Greenprint represents a roadmap for taking their efforts to the next level in the years ahead, we were keen to make it something special. Sure, we did some illustrations, hand-drawn maps and infographics... but the star of the show is the beautiful photography they gave us to work with. You can read the whole thing online or on their website, but nothing beats the smell of fresh ink. Please do check them out and support their work or give them a follow, if you can.

From the archives. Around this time last year we were asked by @greenbankhotel to design some very special cocktail menus - inspired by and in support of the Monsters of the Deep exhibition @nationalmaritimemuseumcornwall. Here's one of the 12 illustrations coming together, as captured by the ever-talented @moss.tattoos, and a couple of other shots of the finished product. We'll share some more of these if you want to see them - and there's some more work coming for the Greenbank Hotel later in the year.

@nationalmaritimemuseumcornwall is a wonderful museum in our home town of Falmouth, and a registered charity.
@moss.tattoos is a Venn alumni who has gone on to follow her dream of being a tattoo artist, and we miss her! Give her a follow - she's got all the skills.

This week sees the end of the @falmouthuni summer shows. Creative Director Zander took a wander round and snapped some of his favourite bits of work. Such a great show, especially delighted to see the variety on display in the @graphicdesignfalmouth work. Hello, I’m Ceri, a Junior Graphic Designer here at Venn. I joined the wonderful team 9 months ago now and feel very lucky to have been working on such a wide variety of projects in branding, animation, UX and much more! I’m very much enjoying my time here and looking forward to seeing what the future brings.

As the world grows more connected, sometimes it can feel like we're growing more apart. In 2021 we worked with @sound_communities_cic to promote their Soundlife podcast, a 6 episode look at loneliness. The podcasts are produced by 12 young people and are worth listening to by anyone interested in what it feels like to be growing up in a world changing so quickly.

The social media campaign was co-created by young people (with the help of our talented friend @hazelbeeves), and podcasts were nominated Best Podcast at the Community Radio Awards 2021. Check them out at https://soundcommunities.co.uk/projects/soundlife/
